Indoor Track Team Continues to
Do Good Work by Channing

The
Oberlin men’s and women’s indoor track teams participated in the
Greater Cleveland Colleges meet at Baldwin-Wallace College last
Friday, Feb. 15.
The
Yeowomen showed nicely in the 400m relay with a time of 4:15.61 and
ended the meet with a noteworthy third-place finish. The Yeomen did
not perform quite so well against their competition and completed
the track meet in fifth place overall. The men’s team was led by
senior Andre Street, who won the 500m with an impressive
running-time of 1:06, while senior April Wynn distinguished herself
among the athletes on the Oberlin women’s team and took the top
trophy for the long jump with a distance of 17’ 3 1/2” as well as
the triple jump, with an exceptional distance of 35’ 0 1/2”. Wynn
also took home the third place prize for the 55m hurdles. Notably,
junior Courtney Stackhouse also won the 55m sprint with a remarkable
time of 7.50 seconds, and seems to be continuing the stellar
performance that she demonstrated last year.
Coach
Tom Mulligan singled out Wynn and Street as top competitors even
before the season began, as they had proven themselves to be
first-tier athletes in the past. Wynn, for example, shared the
triple jump victory indoors and outdoors last year with sophomore
Shannon Houlihan, becoming a national qualifier in the event, while
Street took the conference title in the 800m two years ago. Their
performances this season merely corroborate their coach’s
prediction.
The
Yeowomen also displayed their competitive teeth by taking not only
first place in the triple jump, with Wynn’s victory, but also second
and third place, with notable showings by Shannon Houlihan and
Teresa Collins, respectively.
Junior
Laura Feeney, who broke the Oberlin 3000m record on Friday, Feb. 2,
won third place in the 1500m, and some are looking to see even
greater things from her in the near future.
The
teams will have the opportunity to compete again today, Feb. 22,
during the Oberlin Invitational, held at 6 p.m. at the John Heisman
Club Fieldhouse. Oberlin will play host to Allegheny (Pa.) College,
The College of Wooster, Defiance College, Hiram College, John
Carroll University and Walsh
University. |
